One thing that you see a lot of along the coast of Florida is sailboats. I think these are some of the most exciting boats there are because they require you to have some knowledge to use them correctly. It’s not like getting into a speedboat with a motor and steering wheel and scooting up and down the shore. A sailboat relies on the wind and the experience of the captain to get from one place to another.
Of course, most sailboats have a motor to use to launch the boat, get it back to shore, to use in no wake zones with speed limits and for emergency purposes but you don’t have to use these when out on the open sea.
Sailing can be very relaxing and peaceful but there are a few things you should know before heading out to the water.
• Always have someone with knowledge of the sailboat onboard to ensure safety.
• Watch out for mast and broom, it will hit you if you’re not careful and you could seriously get hurt or find yourself knocked overboard.
• Learn the names of the parts of the sailboat because this could come in handy sometime.
• Check the weather forecast before heading out and have a radio and some form of communication onboard in case you get into trouble.
• Watch out for other vessels on the water. You need to know who has the right-of-way and when.
• Once you get out in open water, sit back, relax and enjoy.
There’s just something mysterious and even romantic about sailing along the ocean. It’s something that I would suggest everyone do at some point in time, even if it’s just once, you’ll be glad you did. However, you do need to aware that for most people, once they’ve been sailing, they want to do it again real soon.
